keeping your bike safe

When I see bikes locked like this, I'm glad that we're not in a neighborhood with a lot of bike theft, otherwise people would be coming back to find their rides gone, or nothing left but the frames.

I often see the first bike locked up here for the day. In a high theft location, someone with bolt cutters would just snip that cable and take the wheels. If a thief was more ambitious, they might use tools to break the U lock and take the whole bike.

On the second bike, only the front wheel is secured. They have a good lock, but a thief could detach the front wheel and steal the rest of the bike.

The third bike has a spaghetti mess of a skinny cable lock. A thief wouldn't even need real bolt cutters to snip that and take the bike.

On the fourth bike, only the frame is locked to the rack. A thief would have an easier time with this one than with the first bike, because the wheels aren't secured.

Too often I see bikes end up like this if only the frame is locked to the rack.

This page has good tips on securely locking your bike. There's no guarantee, but it improves your odds of keeping your bike intact.

Take care and enjoy your ride. I hope that you keep your ride.

Variations on a theme.... If you're off today, enjoy the holiday. If you're working, this song's for you.
