I was saddened but not surprised by the news of Studs Terkel's passing today after 96 years of a life well lived.
Roger Ebert and
Rick Kogan each wrote moving pieces about Studs, who has been the heart and soul of Chicago since before I was born. He had such a rare gift for listening well and capturing the spirit of what he heard in his words and sharing it with his readers through so many books and vivid characters. I can picture him still listening out there somewhere, writing yet another book.
