19th ward blizzard response - the candidates respond: Anne Schaible

On Friday, I mentioned pedestrian safety issues in the wake of last week's blizzard. I've asked the candidates how they would handle future blizzards if they were elected alderman. I will post responses as I receive them.

Here is Anne Schaible's response.

There is an 83yo lady on the **** block of W ***th St who has a 9' ridge of snow blocking her from getting her car out. She is fearful that it won't melt "till April". I have contacted the Review for her. The City plows did this. She can't get to the grocery store.

What would I do differently?

I've proposed a 19th Ward snow command. All too often, we don't have a handle on what's the response to these types of situations in our neighborhood. I would address:

* 19th Ward school closings
* Open pharmacies
* Open grocery stores
* Open gas stations
* Plowing requests/needs
* Com Ed restoration of power
* Metra delays/cancellations
* CTA delays/cancellation
* ER/hospital bypass information

This is the information we need LOCALLY. This is the information we need while the emergency is occurring.

19th ward school closing handled locally? the catholic schools already do make their own call..

I guess Dr. Anne doesn't "get" how CPS works. Precious funding comes with butts in the seats and many kids have no where else to go as either both parents or single parent work.. it can create a financial hardship finding daycare as not everyone has family in the neighborhood ready to watch children. Also, some kids that is the only 2 warm meals they get in the day.. is she aware how many children in the 19th ward are on free or reduced meal plans?

Besides, on this one Daley announced that the schools would be in session on friday at the press conference - that is how the schools heard about it.. not through the normal CPS channels.... so, this one call is on Daley not CPS.

I have a question regarding Dr. Schaible's
"community service" to the OUR ward. She was very active at Whitney Young and St. Nicholas.. last time I looked neither fell with-in the our ward's (the 19th ward)boundaries.

You can tout things you have done to show your an active parent or active citizen - but don't label them as things for "Our ward".

and where did matt have his golf campaign fundraiser???? not ridge or beverly country club, but somewhere far from the 19th ward

Matt's golf outing was so huge that two courses had to be used at once. The ward doesn't have a club with 2 courses.

Also, Ridge and Beverly are private clubs. A public course was the obvious choice for the event, as anyone who attends golf outings can see. Anyway, that doesn't have anything to do with the fact that St. Nick's and Whitney Young aren't in the ward. You missed the point.

It doe have alot to do with it. Thats was tax money taken away from the 19th Ward. Maybe he shouldn't have had a golf outting and did something locally.

You are a goof. Golf outings are functions that garner a lot of participation, and people should feel that they get a lot for their money - and they did get a lot for their money at that outing. The fundraiser was golf. If you don't want to golf, then that's not the fundraiser for you. The food was provided by 19th ward establishments. The local golf courses couldn't accommodate the crowd. No apologies needed. Anyone objecting is jealous that few others could have generated that level of interest - or maybe you don't know squat about golf or how a large outing is orchestrated. JEALOUS!
