South side family pride on Sun. 6/14

 South Side Family Pride picnic is happening on Sunday 6/14 from 1-4 pm at the Castle, Beverly Unitarian Church, 10244 S Longwood. LGBTQ neighbors and allies are invited.

 

Beverly Bike spring ride on Sun. 4/12

 On Sunday 4/12, Beverly Bike is hosting a casual spring ride. This is a family event. 

It starts at the shop (2555 W 111th St.). Meet-up is at 2 pm. Roll out at 2:30. Helmets are required.

We'll ride to Wild Blossom Meadery (91st/Major Taylor Trail). 

 

Chicago Christmas tree recycling

If you have a real Christmas tree, you can take it to one of the locations listed at ChicagoRecycles.org from now to 1/17. Our nearest location is Kennedy Park on Western.

It's a much better alternative than putting out in the trash and having it end up in a landfill. If you take it for recycling, it gets turned into mulch that will be used to help other trees. You can also get mulch for yourself if you bring a container for taking it home.

 

road closure at 107th and Prospect - update

 In case you haven't been that way recently, there is a road closure at the intersection of 107th and Prospect for utility work. It looks like a Water Dept. project and is likely to take a while, depending on weather. 

There's detour signage in SOME places, but they neglected to put any on southbound Prospect. Some geniuses driving south on Prospect decided it was okay to drive across a couple of lawns to go from Prospect to westbound 107th. Who does that? 

I would encourage you to contact the ward office and demand that detour signage be put in place on southbound Prospect.  Here's a link.

I'm not sure if eastbound 107th needs detour signage between Longwood and Prospect, as I haven't gone that way since the construction started. If you're familiar with current conditions there and can confirm that there is no detour signage for eastbound traffic, please leave a comment, and please tell the ward office that this is NOT acceptable. East Beverly and Morgan Park deserve the same level of service as the rest of the ward. 

BAPA porch concert on Sat. 9/13

The next BAPA porch concert is happening on Sat. 9/13  from 6-9:30 pm at the County Fair south parking lot (off 109th St.), featuring 2 bands: Coyote Riot and Rocks Off.

Metra Rock Island shutdown 8/22-8/24

The Beverly branch of the Rock Island Metra line will be shut down starting at 7 pm on Fri 8/22 (projected to continue through Sun 8/24) to replace the Morgan St bridge. They will make more stops on the main line.

Ridge Historical Society on 5/16

On Friday 5/16, Ridge Historical Society is hosting a lecture on "The Forgotten House from Our Community’s Founding" about the discovery of a house from the early days of our community. It was built by one of the community’s earliest settler families just a few years after they aided Black freedom seekers nearby. Given the current condition of the house, this is a history you'll want to learn before it is possibly lost to time.

 If you're an architecture buff, this may be for you - A Brief and Exciting History of Brick Architecture in Chicago. Ridge Historical Society is hosting a lecture on Friday 5/2 starting at 7 pm at 10621 S Seeley.

Brick is an ever-changing material that has defined Chicago and it's architecture. Learn the trends and fashions through Chicago's brick history: Homegrown common bricks, imported red bricks, wild colors, textures, and terracottas of the 1910s-30s, Miesian modern bricks and more. You'll discover the technology and architectural innovations that can be found across Beverly, Morgan Park, and Chicago, written into its brick.

It’s spring (finally) and time to get out into nature. Ben will cover information on recent and ongoing programs that Friends of the Forest Preserves are involved with and the Engagement Corps program being launched in 2025. 

 

About the Presenter: Benjamin Cox became Friends’ first Executive Director in 2004.

As Executive Director, Benjamin leads the advocacy and policy efforts, works to bring resources to the forest preserves in Cook County, and builds partnerships and coalitions to maximize community impact.
