Major Taylor Trail Keepers fundraiser on Fri. 6/19

On Saturday 6/6, we'll have a special event on the Major Taylor Trail at 111th St. Join us from 11 am to 1 pm for a ribbon cutting to celebrate a new temporary art installation and a look at a natural area restoration in progress. 

This is a family friendly event where you can see see Holding Space by Chicago-based artist Nnenna Okore, learn more about the new natural area along the trail south of 111th, make some art of your own, and enjoy some light refreshments with your neighbors.

Major Taylor Trail clean-up workday on Sat. 4/25

On Saturday 4/25 (9 am to noon), Friends of the Major Taylor Trail welcome all who would like to help with our Earth Day trail clean-up. We're meeting on the trail just north of 95th. If you are coming by car, please drive into the 95th/Ashland Jewel parking and look for our tent (see photo below) on the west side of the parking lot next to the trail. 

Please dress for yard work. If you have work gloves, please bring them. There will be some gloves available for use but it's not an infinite supply.

105th St. grade crossing construction

Good news for everyone who's tired of the very rough grade crossing over the Metra tracks at 105th St. 
 

The long overdue grade crossing replacement is happening now and should be done about 4/25. Yeah!!

Beverly Bike spring ride on Sun. 4/12

 On Sunday 4/12, Beverly Bike is hosting a casual spring ride. This is a family event. 

It starts at the shop (2555 W 111th St.). Meet-up is at 2 pm. Roll out at 2:30. Helmets are required.

We'll ride to Wild Blossom Meadery (91st/Major Taylor Trail).

Chicago Christmas tree recycling

If you have a real Christmas tree, you can take it to one of the locations listed at ChicagoRecycles.org from now to 1/17. Our nearest location is Kennedy Park on Western.

It's a much better alternative than putting out in the trash and having it end up in a landfill. If you take it for recycling, it gets turned into mulch that will be used to help other trees. You can also get mulch for yourself if you bring a container for taking it home.

 

road closure at 107th and Prospect - update

 In case you haven't been that way recently, there is a road closure at the intersection of 107th and Prospect for utility work. It looks like a Water Dept. project and is likely to take a while, depending on weather. 

There's detour signage in SOME places, but they neglected to put any on southbound Prospect. Some geniuses driving south on Prospect decided it was okay to drive across a couple of lawns to go from Prospect to westbound 107th. Who does that? 

I would encourage you to contact the ward office and demand that detour signage be put in place on southbound Prospect.  Here's a link.

I'm not sure if eastbound 107th needs detour signage between Longwood and Prospect, as I haven't gone that way since the construction started. If you're familiar with current conditions there and can confirm that there is no detour signage for eastbound traffic, please leave a comment, and please tell the ward office that this is NOT acceptable. East Beverly and Morgan Park deserve the same level of service as the rest of the ward.
