gas main/meter replacement and our corner gardens

As the area where gas meter and gas main replacement closes in on our part of central Beverly, I've been wondering how many corners they will need to dig up. Some of us have substantial gardens on our corners that we don't want destroyed.

A couple of weeks ago I called the phone number on the letter we recently received and asked if our corner and several nearby ones with gardens will need to be dug up. It would be nice to get enough advance warning to safely remove all those plants and temporarily relocate them if it's needed. He said he would check and get back to me. I've gotten no news, so I called and left a follow-up message.

UPDATE

If you have a corner garden, now I have some information. I just got a call back. The Peoples Gas employee who called me back this morning told me that it does NOT appear that they will have to dig up any of our corner garden beds for gas main replacement.

However, if your corner does not have "compliant" ADA curb ramps (the new installations they've been doing in recent years, mostly with poor quality materials that start failing after only a few years), then the curb ramps and curbs would need to be removed and replaced with a new "compliant" installation. I'm sure you've seen how much of the corner they tear up when they do one of these installations.

When you see the crews getting close to your place, ask them how many days until they get to you so you know how much time you have to do any emergency plant relocation.

That WILL affect my corner garden. I believe it will affect at least a few other corner gardens nearby. Looks like I may need to take an emergency day off from work when they're getting close so I have enough time to save my plants. *grumble*

construction update - 98th & Longwood

Update: Nice surprise. Peoples Gas completed the project quickly. The intersection and 98th east of Longwood now have nice smooth pavement.

If only I could say the same of the perpetual torn-up nightmare that is 95th St.  Will it ever get smoothly repaved?

6/13:  This morning on my walk to the train, I discovered lots of construction trucks clogging up Longwood Drive between 97th and 99th. A bunch of frustrated drivers who were stuck at this unannounced construction site were honking and fuming.  The middle of the intersection of 98th & Longwood was being torn up, and those trucks weren't going anywhere.

I turned the corner onto 98th, walking towards Walden, and noticed "no parking" signs posted by Peoples Gas for the time period of 6/13 (today) through 6/23 (a week from Monday).  

Why was there NO advance public notice of this project?  There was NO signage at 97th or 99th warning people not to go that way.  Huge fail for Peoples Gas and the ward.

I hope that BAPA or the alderman's office will get some answers and give us some warning if/when there are more gas line projects on neighborhood streets.  We've endured enough already with the never ending torture of the eternal gas main project on 95th, plus water main construction on 103rd and Wood.  How much more concurrent construction can we endure in a relatively small area?

why should our park be a dumping ground?

In recent weeks, a Peoples Gas crew has been doing work on Longwood Drive just south of Ridge Park (approx. 9725S).  Last week I noticed a small pile of asphalt dumped at the southwest corner of the park.  This morning on my way to the train, I saw a bigger pile, dumped on top of the smaller pile.

I sent Peoples Gas a message, asking them to clean up their mess.  Our park is NOT a dump.  If you'd like to send them an email too, please do.
