BIA bird walk in Dan Ryan Woods on Sat. 5/11

BIA is offering its excellent bird watching walk this Saturday morning starting at 8 a.m. at the 89th St. parking lot in Dan Ryan Woods.

It's a good idea to wear boots or shoes that can handle moist conditions just in case things are soggy due to this week's rain.  If you have binoculars, please bring them.

The walk will be led by conservationist and ornithologist Walter Marcisz and Friends of the Forest Preserves and Arborist Benjamin Cox.

If you need more info, you can send email here

Here's a map link for the start location

BIA family bike ride

Beverly Improvement Association (BIA) is having a short bike ride along the Major Taylor Trail.  You can enjoy a bit of fall color along the north end of the trail (91st St. to 81st St. and back, about 2.5 miles). Chicago Police will attend. This section of the trail has a stoplight for its only street crossing (87th St. at Damen) so it's okay for younger children on smaller bikes. Paul Weise from Beverly Bike and Ski will offer minor tune-ups. Light refreshments will be provided by.

It happens on Sunday 11/1, starting at 3:30 p.m. at Maggie Cosme Park, just west of the 91st St. Metra station.

cross country skiing in Dan Ryan Woods

When there is 4" or more of snow on the ground, there will be Sunday afternoon cross country skiing meet-ups at 1 p.m. at Beverly Bike and Ski, 9121 S. Western. You can find friends to ski with, and enjoy hot chocolate at the shop before you go out. Encourage your friends to come, too.

What? No skis? You can rent skis, boots and poles for $15/day or $25/weekend. Snowshoes are available at the same rates. X-c skiing or snowshoeing is easy. If you want to learn how, call Paul at the shop (773-238-5704) and he'll call one of the regulars so you have someone to go with. It's a great way to enjoy the outdoors in winter and see the peaceful beauty of Dan Ryan Woods in snow.

Seems like a safe bet that we'll have enough snow this weekend.
